State funding for county project vetoed by governor
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the Budget for Fiscal Year 2025-2026 June 30 after vetoing line items totaling $567 million, including several proposed Santa Rosa County projects. The final 2025-2026 budget added up to $117.9 billion, less than the previous year’s and marking the second consecutive year of reduced state spending.
Commissioner Kerry Smith pushes to remove zoning board member
Within the first half hour of the Santa Rosa County Board of Commissioners meeting, Chairman Kerry Smith made clear he wanted to remove a member of the zoning board.
The member in question is Commissioner Ray Eddington’s District 4 representative, Gene Sullivan. Smith accused Sullivan of getting into a verbal altercation with a zoning applicant following the special zoning meeting of May 22.
Construction worker struck by vehicle on Garcon Pointe Bridge
On May 22 at 5 p.m., two vehicles and a pedestrian were involved in a crash on the Garcon Pointe Bridge.
King Middle School teacher arrested for child pornography
Martin Luther King Middle School teacher Johnathan Burchett was arrested May 15 and charged with 24 counts of possession of child sexual abuse material. A press conference was held the following day at Milton City Hall.
Chief Frank is sworn-in for duty
Milton’s first female police chief was sworn in to her duty at Milton City Hall on May 13. Milton Police Department, Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office, and members of the public attended to show their support.
Pace pharmacists busted for pill mill scheme
Pace Pharmacy pharmacists Stephen Allen Burklow and David Barron Winkles, and the pharmacy office manager Monique Burklow, were arrested on May 14. The three were charged with conspiring to traffic prescription drugs.
County Commissioners extend the Rural Protection Zone
The Board of County Commissioners extended the Rural Protection Zone (RPZ) with no objections on May 8.
