Bass tournament to benefit drowning victim’s family

Pete Griffin and Dewayne Vasquez grew up together in Milton. As boys, they built a tree fort from which they hunted guinea hens with pellet guns in a field near their neighborhood.
“We never wound up killing any of them, but we tried for months,” Vasquez remembered last week. “We were 8 or 9 years old; we didn’t really know what we were doing, but we kept at it. We knew we were definitely doing something most kids don’t get to do.”

It’s time to end time changes

Ben Franklin did a lot of great things for this country. One of his bright ideas that I am not found of, and really hate to be honest, is daylight-saving time.

Well, that’s not entirely true. I actually prefer daylight-saving time. What I don’t like is the switch back to standard time.

Out and About

With so much political drama at the recent county commission meetings, we aren’t sure what county business is being tended to.

We have an apology from Sam Parker for using a derogatory term against Jews – of which I’m 26.6% Jewish – and I accept his apology.

Pace’s girls basketball team falls in district final

In a pressure-packed third quarter Friday night, a district title riding on the outcome, Aisley Shields had two great looks from beyond the arc that likely would have swung the momentum in Pace’s direction.

On the first attempt, the ball nearly rolled in before rolling out. The ball simply bounced off the rim on the second shot.

Slow start tough to overcome for Panthers

When Javier Valarezo knocked down his second 3-pointer of the game Wednesday night against Pensacola, cutting the Tiger lead to eight at Barbara Rose Gymnasium, the Milton Panthers started to believe that perhaps they could rally for a road win.

After a slow start, the Panthers were back in the game, but they couldn’t get the stops they needed defensively to flip the script in a 60-44 loss.

Dusting Off

In the 20-plus years I have been a journalist, I have covered hundreds of events, written thousands of stories. However, the story that had probably the biggest impact on my life wasn’t even a story that I wrote.

In October 2016, I was the editor of two different weekly newspapers, one that sadly isn’t around any longer and the other is not the paper that it used to be because of budget cuts, which is just as sad. That was when we found out that Alaqua Animal Refuge had rescued dozens of Great Danes.

Some things aren’t easier with time

It’s hard for me to believe, but I have lived in Northwest Florida for more than 20 years now.

I moved down here from Indiana back in November 2002. At the time, my best friend and his girlfriend, now his wife, moved to Okaloosa Island to take jobs at some local newspapers.

Collectible K9s: Sheriff’s Office hands out specialized cards to community

Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office has gone to the dogs! Or, at least, they are very excited about telling the community about them.

The law enforcement agency recently started an initiative to reach out to the community and positively engage them in what the K9 unit does. As a part of that initiative, the Sheriff’s Office has created a special set of trading cards that highlight the various K9s in the unit.
