A student on the school board? That is what a group of students called for at the June 13 Santa Rosa County School Board meeting.

While it may seem preposterous to some, it’s allowed by state law and has been implemented in some school districts across Florida.

The University of West Florida celebrated the planting of a “Moon Tree” seedling that flew around the moon on NASA’s Artemis 1 mission in 2022. UWF was selected from hundreds of organizations that applied to receive a seedling.

Four students from Sims Middle School competed at the National Speech & Debate Association’s 2024 National Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, the week of June 19 through 21. There, they competed against 7,000 students from the top speech and debate programs from around the world.

There was a significant shake-up in Santa Rosa District Schools in June.

At the June 13 school board meeting, the district appointed seven people to new positions at schools throughout the district, including four principals at Holley Navarre Primary School, Avalon Middle School, East Milton Elementary School and Gulf Breeze Elementary School.

If you arrived late to last week’s Jay High graduation, you had to find somewhere to squeeze in.

Every seat was taken inside the school’s gymnasium as the community gathered to celebrate the class of 2024.

Proud parents, eager students and Pace High School staff packed the Pensacola Bay Center Saturday, May 25 for the Class of 2024’s final send off. The event saw Several hundred graduate.

Valedictorian Madison Quintanilla and Salutatorian Atiye Buker gave speeches reflecting on their time at Pace High and with their classmates, as well as words of encouragement for all those entering the next phase of life.

The City of Milton announced that applications are now open for the second annual Summer Youth Intern Program. Organized by the LEAP Committee — focusing on Leadership, Experience in Communication, Academics, and Professionalism — this program is tailored for local youth aged 16-18 who are eager to gain firsthand experience in municipal government and public service.

The Santa Rosa School District voted to promote three individuals to new leadership positions during Monday night’s meeting, which also opens up two principal positions for the 2024-2025 school year.

Warren Stevens has been named the district’s new director of continuous improvement; Mandy King, the coordinator of literacy; and Nadia Colin, public information and family/community outreach office.

Rosemont, Illinois — On the weekend of Saturday, May 11, Martin Luther King Middle School joined 159 of the top middle school quiz bowl teams at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare Chicago for the 2024 Middle School National Championship Tournament.
