Several area teams are ranked in the first set of FHSAA regional rankings for volleyball.
In 6A, Pace and Navarre are both in the top eight. In 1A, Jay and Central are both in the top eight.
Even when the scoreboard isn’t on and the bleachers are empty, Jay’s volleyball team is putting in work as if it’s game day.
“My motto is practice with a purpose,” head coach Carey Locklin said.
Area teams competed at the Gulf Coast Stampede Saturday at the Escambia County Equestrian Center in Pensacola.
The meet featured runners from 13 states on a morning that began with a slight chill in the air but warmed up as time went on.
The final score doesn’t tell the story. Undefeated Jay (3-0) dominated winless Franklin County (0-3) from the opening kickoff in a 41-18 victory Friday night.
“That was the plan, to come out and execute, to start believing more that we can win, and that’s just what we did,” Jay head coach Brian Watson said after the game. “We took the opening kick off down the field for a touchdown, the defense got a three-and-out and we were back in business.”
A dominant start to the 2023 season continued Saturday for the University of West Florida football team as it went on the road and rolled past McKendree 35-3 in Lebanon, Illinois.
The No. 6 Argos scored 35 points for the second consecutive week and have yet to allow a touchdown, giving up only a field goal for the second straight week.
Francisco Ramirez was fast during his cross-country and track days at Pace. Then he got to college, competing for NCAA Division II Flagler, and he learned while he’s still fast, so is everyone else.
Last Friday’s matchup at Washington was the perfect opportunity for the Milton Panthers to get back on track after a 42-7 loss at the hands of Niceville last week.
And boy, did they deliver, rolling to a 28-0 win over the Wildcats.
