Occasionally, I meet someone, who, upon learning my name, says, “Oh, you’re the guy that writes that column.” For the record, this only happens locally since my column is not syndicated, but I am nonetheless thrilled to meet anyone who reads it.

Father’s Day hits differently when your dad is no longer with you. I lost my dad last spring, and this will be the second year in a row where I won’t be able to call him, send him a card or take a trip home to see him like I did four years ago, which happened to be the last Father’s Day weekend we spent together.

It’s going to hurt for a while for Pace. Losing a state championship game typically does. The Patriots seemed to be on the brink of winning a title in softball for the first time in 16 years when they took the field two weeks ago against Bartow on a hot and sunny afternoon in Clermont.

James Calkins is not new to making controversial statements, but last week at a Board of County Commission meeting, he crossed a line. He openly refused to apologize and in fact, to the shock of the audience, doubled down on his words.

“He’s going home,” we both pronounced with confidence. My wife and I have been binge-watching the History Channel’s reality show “Forged in Fire.” After watching an entire season’s worth of shows, we noticed a trend: the contestant who boasts the most in their introductory clip tends to be the first one eliminated. The moment a contestant begins his boast, we make our pronouncement. We are correct more times than not.

Five innings came and went. No score. Jay still was very much alive in its quest to repeat as state champions as it battled Branford in a 1A state semifinal last Monday in Clermont. Then came the sixth. Branford scored two. The Royals tried to rally. They poured their heart and soul into it. But this was one of those days where the hits and the runs just were few and far between.

When I was younger, this was my favorite time of the year. School was just letting out, I had the summer ahead of me to go to the pool, play outside, go to summer camp and enjoy the weather. I’m grateful to have the winter weather behind me, but summer doesn’t have the same appeal to me now as it did back then.
