If you were at Bear Lake, the popular recreation area in Blackwater State Forest, on Sunday, June 2, you might have noticed multiple Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office K9s and large groups of people carrying out individuals on makeshift stretchers. While this might have looked like a pretty serious situation, there was no need for alarm. The Sheriff’s Office K9 unit wasn’t searching for someone lost and those people carrying others on stretchers weren’t carrying anyone that was hurt. It was all a simulation.

Santa Rosa County Animal Services is hosting a Community Cats Day for Santa Rosa County residents Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Santa Rosa County Animal Shelter, 4451 Pine Forest Road in Milton. Up to 40 stray/feral cats will be accepted for free spay and neutering through community cats program funding. Participants must be Santa Rosa County residents and are required to show proof of residency in Santa Rosa County. Participants can bring up to three community cats per participant, first come, first served.

A major storm event in April 2014 resulted in 24 inches of rain in an eight-hour time frame, causing widespread flooding and many erosion problems on private lands in Santa Rosa County. A major problem that occurred during this storm was the formation of a large gully on the property owned by Jimmy Andajaur and Kari Brock in north-central Santa Rosa County. Overnight, a gully approximately 30 feet deep, 50 feet wide, and over a quarter mile long formed.

On 640 acres off County Road 182 near Allentown, you’ll find the Jay Research Facility, which is a part of the UF/IFAS West Florida Research and Education Center. UF/IFAS, which stands for the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, is a federal-state-county partnership dedicated to developing knowledge in agriculture, human and natural resources, and the life sciences, and enhancing the quality of human life by making that information accessible. The college has a dozen research facilities across the state.

For those of you looking for another dollar store to shop at in Santa Rosa County, you’re in luck. There are currently two Dollar Generals in development in the north end of Santa Rosa County, one on Woodbine Road in Pace and another in East Milton at the corner of Hickory Hammock Road and Ward Basin Road. They have both been approved by the county.

Former Santa Rosa County Commissioner Don Salter was selected as the 2022 Friend of Agriculture for Santa Rosa County.

Salter is a Santa Rosa County native, born in Jay in 1947. His father was a farmer and grew peanuts for a time before moving to Cantonment. He was first elected to the county commission office in November 2000 and re-elected in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016. He also served as chairman several times during his time in his office.
