Commissioners approve land agreement amid opposition

The Board of County Commissioners held a 5-0 vote to approve a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between Santa Rosa County and the city of Milton. The vote occurred at their regular meeting on the morning of Thursday, April 28. They moved the matter to the regular agenda of April 28 after also discussing the matter at the April 25 commission meeting. On Thursday, five members of the community expressed their opinion on the matter—every one of them was against approval of the MOA.

NAS Whiting Field off-base housing sewage leak

On April 25 at 8 a.m., a sewer main line near the Navy’s Whiting Pines housing community backed up and spilled into a city storm water ditch. As a result, the sewage flowed into a creek north of Berryhill Road. The NAS Whiting Field Public Works Department is evaluating the situation and cleanup has been initiated.

Livestock officer charged with killing stray mule

Justice is being served for the stray mule that was shot and killed on Tuesday, April 12. Philip Alan Hayes has been charged with felony for torturing or inflicting pain, serious injury, or death on an animal, as well as a misdemeanor for the inhumane slaughter of livestock. Hayes turned himself in to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office around 10 p.m. on Monday, April 18, almost a week after the incident on Deaton Bridge Road in Milton. Hayes was released just after midnight.
Certified burner to blame for wildfire

A controlled burn turned into a wildfire on Friday, April 8, 2022. Firefighters with the Florida Forest Service’s Blackwater Forestry Center, in addition to other departments, fought a wildfire near Dickerson City Road at Garcon Point in Santa Rosa County beginning early on Friday afternoon.
