Milton senior activity draws musicians, onlookers

If you walk into Milton’s Clyde L. Gracey Community Center on a Friday afternoon, you might hear guitars, fiddles and, maybe even a harmonica. These sounds aren’t coming from a radio or a jukebox but from a group of seniors, gathered to perform and listen to each other play for a weekly event known as Pickin’ and Grinnin’.

SRCAS hosting Community Cat Days Aug. 22 and 23

Santa Rosa County Animal Services is hosting Community Cat Days for Santa Rosa County residents Tuesday, Aug. 22, and Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Santa Rosa County Animal Shelter, 4451 Pine Forest Road in Milton. Up to 30 stray/feral cats will be accepted for free spay and neutering through community cats program funding.

Inline speedskating track is one of a kind

All eyes from the inline speedskating community are on Milton with the completion of the track at Weber’s Skate World. The governing body of inline speedskating came out with new designs for parabolic tracks that fits in with the new technology as well as the speeds now reached in skating.

The National Association of Town Watch – a nationwide network of law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associations and volunteers – introduced the first National Night Out in August 1984. Two-and-a-half million people in 400 communities across 23 states participated.

Alexis Parker remembers her time as a first-year cadet and going through the week-long Pace NJROTC NS1 camp that gives newcomers a feel for what life will be like in the program and what it takes to be successful in it. Three years later, Parker, a senior, is the commanding officer of a unit that has won the last three national championships, and she’s come a long way and is ready to embrace her new responsibilities.

Jay farmer receives Farm Press award for efficiency

If you have ever enjoyed a peanut M&M, then you can likely thank Ryan Jenkins for growing that peanut in his fields in Jay. Recently, Jenkins received recognition as the 2023 Farm Press Peanut Efficiency Award winner for the lower Southeast. Jenkins, whose family has been farming in north Santa Rosa County for generations, was named the award winner for using farming practices that manage resources such as water and seed more efficiently.
