Jay, Central and Pace all placed in the top 10 at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Tournament at A.C. Read in Pensacola on Tuesday. Navarre and Milton also competed in the tourney.

Monday night matches are never easy. But for Central’s volleyball team, playing right out of the gate after the weekend was tough for other reasons.

“Our two setters and libero were at an FFA event all day and to drive back from Marianna. The teachers and parents helped out in making sure the kids made it here,” head coach Mark Gough said.

Jay’s volleyball team is still No. 1 in Rural Region 1 and is now the top team in the state as well.

The Patriots took third overall while the Raiders were sixth. Jay’s Presley Hawthorne competed as an individual and shot an 84 to finish 13th overall. She was one of only two 1A golfers to place in the top 15.

It was almost deafening inside the Beniah Gymnasium as L.E.A.D. Academy’s volleyball took the floor for a match during the school day.

Children cheered. One teacher ran around the gym encouraging the students to do the Wave.

Pace’s boys cross-country team earned a top 10 finish at the Daphne Invitational on Sept. 21 at Blakely State Park in Alabama.

It’s time to take a look at how this past week went for football teams in our coverage area.

Jay stayed unbeaten while Central and Navarre both lost on Friday. Pace and Milton did not play.

Coming off a bye week, Jay put its undefeated record on the line, welcoming Holmes County to Merle V. North Stadium for a Friday night football showdown.

The Royals faced their greatest test of the season to date, but they ultimately prevailed 24-14.

Central’s football team didn’t win last Thursday night’s road game against Baker, but the Jaguars did show plenty of fight from start to finish in a 30-8 loss.

A light schedule is ahead in the area this week as only Central and Jay are in action on the football field.

The Jaguars are on the road against Baker tonight while the Royals host Holmes County Friday night.
