Milton city staff are working out details of a fentanyl awareness campaign to explain the drug’s dangers. Riley Perantoni, a Gulf Breeze High School junior, on Thursday, Sept. 21, asked the City of Milton Council to consider a resolution he drafted outlining a program to combat fentanyl-related deaths.

The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday said state regulators did not adequately justify approval of a settlement that increased base electric rates for Florida Power & Light and ordered a new explanation. Justices, in a 4-2 opinion, sent a battle about the settlement back to the Florida Public Service Commission, saying regulators in a 2021 decision did not meet a legal requirement of showing why the agreement “is in the public interest and results in rates that are fair, just and reasonable.”

FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) at 1:20 p.m. (central time) Wednesday, Oct. 4. The national test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. Both tests are scheduled to begin at approximately 1:20 p.m. CT/2:20 p.m. ET Wednesday, Oct. 4.

A proposed interlocal agreement between the City of Milton and Santa Rosa County would allow the county to pump untreated wastewater from its industrial parks on State Road 87 South into the city’s sewage system, which already is near capacity.

It’s official. Scott Collins has signed a 21-month contract to be Milton’s city manager beginning Oct. 2. But nothing pertaining to Collins’ hiring has been without controversy. “I’m happy that Mr. Collins is now our city manager, but I wasn’t pleased about the process,” Councilmember Marilyn Farrow said at the council’s agenda workshop meeting Sept. 21 after announcing that City Attorney Alex Andrade and Collins had executed a contract.

The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners voted 4-1 at its special budget meeting Tuesday, Sept. 19, not to act on impact fees until at least October 2024. Commissioner Sam Parker suggested the moratorium; he said construction costs already are too high and the economy “is becoming a wreck.”
