On Thursday, March 13, Toby James White, who was apprehended by law enforcement Jan. 25 for second degree murder, was found dead in his cell at Santa Rosa County Jail.

After a two monthlong investigation, Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two county residents for child abuse and neglect. Jesse Allen Smith, 29, of Jay, is charged with cruelty toward a child, which is described as aggravated child abuse. Jordan Chase Moore, 28, of Pace, is charged with child neglect with great bodily harm. At the time of the arrests, the two were involved in a relationship.

A Navarre woman’s 2022 death has reentered the spotlight as her ex-boyfriend and the father of her child was set to go on trial April 28 for allegedly kidnapping her, which resulted in her death. The federal trial of Marcus Spanevelo, who is alleged to have transported Navarre resident Cassie Carli’s body to Alabama and buried it in a shallow grave in Springville, a 40-minute drive from Birmingham, is being examined by a capital review committee to see if he could possibly face the death penalty.

A traffic crash at the corner of Highway 87 S and Allentown Road in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Nov. 27, has one fatality, per a Florida Highway Patrol report.

A Milton man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for sexually abusing a then seven-year-old multiple times between 2020 and 2021.

The founder of a horse farm in Milton found himself behind bars Monday, May 5 for pointing a rifle at an Uber driver. Sean Hollonbeck, 54, faces kidnapping – false imprisonment and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill charges stemming from a May 4 incident involving his daughter and an Uber driver.

A 40-year-old woman was killed Friday, April 11, when the driver, 46, of an SUV struck the pedestrian. The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m.

A Jay man was arrested Wednesday evening, March 27, after he led law enforcement on a chase which ended on Highway 87 N. The incident stemmed from a search warrant being served on the man’s property in connection with a case out of Escambia County. Travis Paul Sterback, 27, is charged with trafficking in synthetic cannabinoids, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, fleeing and eluding at high speed and firing a weapon in public.

The family of a hit and run victim is finally close to getting closure nearly two years after the incident. Jack Crawford died Sept. 27, 2022, following a crash he was involved in the previous day.

A federal fugitive is behind bars in Santa Rosa County after an Aug. 24 traffic stop uncovered cocaine and other drugs in the vehicle near Garcon Point Road and Interstate 10.
