On June 27, Santa Rosa District Schools played host to a delegation of ten women leaders in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) from the Republic of Congo.
Butterflies in Motion, Inc. – formerly known as Panhandle Butterfly House and Nature Center, Inc. – uses a mobile butterfly habitat to deliver free educational programs across northern Florida between late spring and the end of the Monarch butterfly migration in October. In just its second season, it already has earned awards for environmental education from the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs and the six-state Deep South Regional Garden Club; it also has received a conservation education award from National Garden Clubs Inc.
Santa Rosa District Schools has announced the creation of a parental education series, which will take place this summer. The school district is encouraging families to join the series to learn more about mental health awareness, suicide prevention, being safe on the internet, and bullying awareness and prevention.
Tami McConnell, science department head at Navarre High School, smiled broadly as she and colleagues from Escambia, Okaloosa and Santa Rosa counties toured the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station last week.
“I’ve found my people!” she exclaimed.

Several students from the school are heading to Washington, D.C. in June for the 2023 National History Day competition. Abraham Jordan, Brooklyn Bentley and Brenna Delezen will be competing June 12-15 with research projects they put together over the past year.
A rainy day gave way to clear skies in time for 435 Milton High School seniors to walk across the stage and accept a diploma Tuesday at Haywood Hanna Panther Stadium.

With that in mind, Santa Rosa Press Gazette sat down with Santa Rosa District Schools’ superintendent Dr. Karen Barber to talk about the school year’s biggest successes, challenges and the new things coming to county schools in fall 2023.
For nearly an hour of the more than three and half-hour school board meeting earlier this month, concerned citizens, most of which were with Moms For Liberty members, spoke on the appropriateness of certain books in Santa Rosa District Schools and questioned the process by which parents can make decisions about the reading material available to their children.
Moms for Liberty claims that there at least 28 books found on the Santa Rosa District Schools website that had sexually explicit or culturally indoctrinating language in them. The group provided three examples including “A Court of Thorns and Roses” by Sarah J. Maas and “Triangles” by Ellen Hopkins, both of which have been targeted by other Moms for Liberty chapters.
At the May 4 Santa Rosa County School Board meeting, students who participated in the 2023 Commissioner’s Academic Challenge state tournament were recognized.
Braxton Parker always knew he wanted to be a chef; he just didn’t know he would be recognized for it at such an early age.
Parker, a third-grade student at Rhodes Elementary School, won Santa Rosa County District Schools’ 2023 Sodexo Future Chefs Challenge. His official title after winning the competition is Santa Rosa County Future Chef Grand Champion.
