“It’s Kaliyah! Mama, she’s hanging herself in her closet!” Williams’ 13-year-old daughter, Nevaeh, cried hysterically into the phone.

“May the Fourth be with you,” a pun on the famous Star Wars line “May the Force be with you,” has led to May 4 being known as Star Wars Day, an unofficial holiday to celebrate all things Star Wars. Although its popularity has certainly grown in the past decade, the earliest celebrations of the commemorative day are almost as old as the franchise itself.

Funeral services for former Milton City Councilwoman Sharon Holley, who died Sunday at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, will begin with visitation at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Beaver Creek Baptist Church, 6989 Beaver Creek Highway in Baker, followed by interment.

Bass tournament to benefit drowning victim’s family

Pete Griffin and Dewayne Vasquez grew up together in Milton. As boys, they built a tree fort from which they hunted guinea hens with pellet guns in a field near their neighborhood.
“We never wound up killing any of them, but we tried for months,” Vasquez remembered last week. “We were 8 or 9 years old; we didn’t really know what we were doing, but we kept at it. We knew we were definitely doing something most kids don’t get to do.”
TDC approves spending $70K for Native American cultural center

The Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council agreed last week to fund development of a Native American cultural gallery in Milton.
Dan Helms, chief of the Santa Rosa County Band of the Lower Muscogee, described the project and asked for $70,000 from the TDC at its April 6 board meeting. After a brief discussion, the board voted unanimously to provide the whole amount from its reserve funds.
