Lighthouse Makos make school history in basketball
Beaten in the title game a year ago, the Makos made sure this time around would be different as they defeated Mid-Atlantic Christian 87-76 in the New South Atlantic Championship game Sunday in Milton.

But winning didn’t come easy for the Makos, who had to overcome an 11-point deficit to secure the victory. Trailing 42-38 at halftime, Lighthouse took its first lead at 47-46 two minutes into the second half and held on for the win.
Eddie Brown, the player of the year in the league for the second straight year, poured in 17 points. He finished the season averaging 29 points per outing. Sam Benton Jr. also scored 17 in the title game while Wol Yak added 10 against the Mustangs.
For Brown, winning a championship is a huge deal, especially after how last year ended.
“It means the world to me,” Brown said. “I’ve been here since the start and I put the hours in to win back-to-back (NSAC) MVP honors and a championship for this college. I’m so grateful.”
More on Lighthouse: Eddie Brown once again leading way for Makos
The Makos advanced to the final with an 82-68 win over reigning champ Apprentice School, which beat the Makos by three in the title game a season ago, winning 58-55.
They overcame a deficit in that one as well, trailing 15-3 before battling back. Benton scored 22 points to lead the way for Lighthouse.
The Makos went 27-2 this year, including a 13-0 record in conference play. But because they are an independent school, they will not get a chance to play in the national tournament.
Brown, Benton and Yak all earned all-conference honors. Brown was a first-team pick, Benton was a second-team selection and Yak earned third-team honors.
