“We were on the upward momentum of getting back on track to what’s considered a normal life and our own place,” Morrison said. “We were so close to just getting back on track.”
The next day, all of those plans went out the window as Morrison’s life flipped upside down. Phillips died in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 on her way back from work at a local junkyard. The truck she was driving was the only vehicle the couple had, Morrison said.
Now, he’s trying to come up with the money to pay for Phillips’ funeral, as well as money needed to purchase a new vehicle so he can get back and forth to work.
As of May 28 at 3 p.m., a GoFundMe had raised just over $1,000 with a goal of $10,000.
On top of Phillips’ death, her service dog, Buddy, is also still missing after surviving the accident. Morrison said when the wreck happened, Buddy survived but ran away when first responders got to the vehicle. Morrison stayed by the side of the interstate, trying to find Buddy but after searching and calling his name, he was nowhere to be found.
Morrison and Phillips have four children. They are currently living with their biological mother in Alabama.
“She loved being a mom and a wife, and she was damn good at both of them,” Morrison said.
