Florida participates in second annual tax free holiday

| Staff Reporters
The start of the new school year is just around the corner. Students in Santa Rosa County will return to class on August 11, leaving less than a month before the semester begins.

This means that it’s officially time to buy school supplies again, or, in the case of those starting or returning to college, it’s time to gather your XL twin bed sheets and comforters, air purifiers, shower caddies and chosen décor. Either way, you’ll likely have to drop both time and money in the coming weeks. However, Florida will be participating in a tax-free period for the second consecutive year to help offset the costs of supplies.

The 2025 Back to School Sales Tax Holiday will take place from Aug. 1-31. During this time, some items will be exempt from sales tax. According to the Florida Department of Revenue, these include:

  • Learning aids and jigsaw puzzles selling for $30 or less
  • Most school supplies selling for $50 or less
  • Clothing, footwear and accessories selling for $100 or less
  • Computers and related accessories selling for $1,500 or less (when purchased for non-commercial and personal use).

These items will be exempt from the state sales tax of 6% for the entire month of August.
