Five questions with Milton City Council candidate Ashley Fretwell
Early voting is underway in Santa Rosa County and will continue until Nov. 2, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Below are Ashley Fretwell’s answers to our questionnaire:
SRPG: What are some of the qualities that the new Chief of Police should have?
The new chief of police should be humble, strong and ready to lead. They should put the concerns of the citizens as a top priority, as well as ensuring the community feels safe and up to date on crime, safety and laws.
SRPG: Citizens have addressed their concerns with the wastewater effluent carrying PFAS into our drinking water. How will you address these concerns?
In the most recent city council meeting, City Manager Ed Spears spoke on the possible relocation of one of the spray fields. This would address the concerns that have been voiced regarding the chemicals that would potentially be sprayed over an aquifer that supplies a large amount of the county’s drinking water. The treatment plant is needed. Our current treatment plant is exceeding capacity.
SRPG: Traffic has been an ongoing issue in Downtown Milton. What should be done about this, if anything, and what would the timeline for that project be?
The plan to four lane Highway 90 is in the design phase. This will allow traffic to flow more adequately since many people turn right on Willing Street and other side roads once back into downtown Milton. There is also a Complete Streets program that is being discussed which would allow for roads that are more appropriate for pedestrians as well as maintaining better traffic flow.
SRPG: What makes you the right candidate? Tell us about your platform.
I believe in being respectful, honest and transparent. I would bring a fresh outlook to the council and ensure that I research and prepare for all concerns that are brought forth. The council is elected to serve the citizens of Milton, not to be serviced by them.
SRPG: How can you reaffirm the citizens trust in you as a city council member?
I can affirm the citizens’ trust by listening to their concerns, making sure they feel heard, and doing what is best for the community as a whole. I understand I will not be able to make everyone happy. That would be an unrealistic goal for anyone. The important aspect is for the community to be able to look at me and know that I have done the research, researched their concerns and will do what is best for the City of Milton.
