The rejection of the half-cent sales tax by Santa Rosa County voters has, according to county staff, hindered the county’s budget when it comes to road repair and infrastructure for a growing county. It has left the county to seek other revenue sources to fund projects.
Commission Chairman Kerry Smith said, “We had to figure out a way to pay for these projects the citizens want. They have made it clear that infrastructure and roads are their top priority. This is the best way we could figure out how to get there.” It would mean an additional mill assessed to property owners to cover the cost, rather than everyone sharing in the cost as in a sales tax.
Smith insisted the MSTU was not meant as retaliatory, but rather a realistic and needed approach to paying for projects.
