Normally, when you see several police cars with their red and blues on, excitement isn’t the first word that comes to mind. On August 5, the Milton Police Department and Santa Rosa County first responders aimed to change that.

Locklin Technical College’s Heating, Ventilation Air Conditioning/Refrigeration building is tucked away in an unassuming corner on campus. It’s plain: dark brick, the number 15 signifying the building number on its corner, a red and white sign telling you what program is held inside. From the outside, you wouldn’t think anything about the building. It would just be one of many on the campus; inside, however, is where the magic happens.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, approximately 45.5% of American households own at least one dog. If this includes you, picture your dog. Maybe it’s a thirteen-year-old chihuahua, maybe it’s a rottweiler puppy. Either way, recall a fond memory with your dog. You come home to them every day. Sometimes, they greet you at the door. Sometimes you sleep in the same bed.

Between June and July, Holley-Navarre Fire Department responded to 11 separate gas leaks – each caused by fiber optic boring activity. The fiber lines, owned by Live Oak Fiber, inadvertently struck underground gas lines maintained by Okaloosa Gas District, prompting repeated shelter-in-place orders for local residents.

On School Lane in Pace, on the grounds of Covenant Church in front of the playground, there sits a small, white wooden box. It’s stocked with food, water and toiletries, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It’s inconspicuous; there are no signs, no flashing lights, no cameras, no need to show your ID or proof that you live in the area. It’s quiet, peaceful.

In January 2017, Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office received an over $12,000 donation to purchase a new K-9. The unit’s police dog, Ziggy, worked with the county until 2022, when he retired with his handler. Now, after three years of retirement, Ziggy has been diagnosed with two different types of cancer: carcinoma in his front nasal cavity, and a transitional-cell carcinoma on his bladder.
