Jurors found Tavis Williams guilty on Sept. 1 and was sentenced by Circuity Judge Clifton Drake.
Williams was sentenced as a prison releasee offender, which makes him unable for gain time or any form of discretionary release. He must serve the full term of 15 years. The time will also run consecutively to a prison sentence he is already serving on charges out of Miami-Dade County.
Williams and the victim were cellmates at the Santa Rosa Correctional Institute in May 2022, prosecutors said. After a brief physical altercation, Williams put the victim in a chokehold and held it until the victim died.
