Tornado watch in effect and flash flood risk increasing

| Staff Reporters

A TORNADO WATCH is in effect for our area until 5 p.m. today as post-tropical cyclone Arthur is now a trough across SE Texas extending into SW Louisiana, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Accuweather Radar shows a significant amount of rain headed to Northwest Florida.

What can we expect?

The remnants of Arthur are expected to be caught by a mid-level trough and accelerate off to the northeast direction today through Friday. The NHC says the remnant of Arthur will continue to produce widespread heavy rains across the southeastern United States during the next few days.

Arthur is expected now to produce rainfall totals of 5 – 10″ with isolated higher totals near 20″ through early Friday, from southern and central portions of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, along with western portions of Georgia and the Florida Panhandle. This could, says the NHC, generate dangerous to life threatening flash flooding.

Currently, our area remains under the following alerts:

  • High Surf Advisory until Friday at 6 p.m.
  • Small Craft Advisory until Friday at 6 a.m.
  • High Rip Current Risk with large breaking waves of 5-7 feet until Saturday at 6 p.m.
  • Tornado Watch until 5 p.m. Thursday
  • Flash Flood Watch until Friday 6 p.m.

According to Santa Rosa County Emergency Management, there is a rare high risk for significant life threatening flash flooding today (6/18/26). These risks are reserved for extreme events capable of producing major to catastrophic flooding. We can expect widespread road closures and flooding in areas that do not typically flood. Rivers, creeks and streams may quickly rise out of their banks.
