Santa Rosa County Public Safety is urging residents to be prepared for the cold weather that will settle Tuesday night through Wednesday morning by remembering the 5 P’s of cold weather safety.

Santa Rosa County is under a freeze warning from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m., except for the immediate coast. Temperatures are expected to be at their coldest early Wednesday morning with many areas of the county dipping to 32 degrees or below.

Santa Rosa Medical Center, in partnership with various county and regional entities, will be hosting an emergency preparedness exercise on Oct. 21.

Other organizations involved in the exercise include Santa Rosa County Emergency Operations Center, Santa Rosa County Schools, LifeGuard Ambulance, University of West Florida, Milton Police Department, Milton Fire Department and hospital emergency management personnel.

Healthy Start Florida, a free home visiting program that provides education and care coordination to pregnant women and families of children under three years old, is seeking donations of pre-mixed baby formula, baby bottles with disposable liners, and other baby supplies for families in hurricane-affects areas.

Many families have been displaced from their homes, and baby supplies are in short supply. Since some areas lack access to safe drinking water, Healthy Start requests only pre-mixed – not powdered formula.

The Florida Department of Transportation expects eventually to buy and tear down the Whittle Building to make room to expand U.S. Highway 90 through Milton, Santa Rosa County Commissioner Dave Piech reaffirmed Monday.
In the meantime, the county is preparing to lease the vacant, dilapidated former automobile dealership and records warehouse.

The Florida Department of Health in Santa Rosa County (DOH-Santa Rosa) today advised residents there has been an increase in mosquito-borne disease activity in areas of Santa Rosa County.

A human case of West Nile Virus has been confirmed and there is a heightened concern additional residents will become ill. Santa Rosa County Mosquito Control and DOH-Santa Rosa continue surveillance and prevention efforts. DOH-Santa Rosa wants to remind residents and visitors to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes and to take basic precautions to help limit exposure.

Former Santa Rosa County Commissioner Don Salter was selected as the 2022 Friend of Agriculture for Santa Rosa County.

Salter is a Santa Rosa County native, born in Jay in 1947. His father was a farmer and grew peanuts for a time before moving to Cantonment. He was first elected to the county commission office in November 2000 and re-elected in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016. He also served as chairman several times during his time in his office.

Santa Rosa County Public Safety will be celebrating Halloween with the community by hosting a family-friendly Haunted Open House on Tue., Oct. 18 from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 4499 Pine Forest Road, in Milton.

At the event, children and adults can enter a costume contest, play games, get a jump start on Halloween treats and learn valuable Halloween safety tips.
