According to a release, the closure will begin Aug. 10. While the closure is underway, the nearby splash pad and playground near it will remain open.
The new playground will be an updated version of the existing castle-themed playground with a plastic slide attached to one of the towers.
Crews will begin removing a commemorative tile wall that welcomes guests to the wooden castle playground. The county says years of vandalism and weather-related damage have resulted in broken or missing tiles.
To preserve those memories, the county says the tiles will be removed and stored near the wall and that those wishing to retrieve their tile can do so prior to Monday, Aug. 10. After that date, residents will not be allowed to enter the construction area while demolition is ongoing.
A digital archive has been created so that residents, community supporters and visitors can view and download the available images of the tiles.
Families can go to www.santarosa.gov/118/Benny-Russell-Park-Tile-Wall-Memories-Pa to view it. The county says it recognizes the importance of the tile wall, and the digital archive is being used to preserve its legacy.
The closure is expected to conclude by Thanksgiving, weather permitting.
