Early voting is underway in Santa Rosa County and will continue until Nov. 2, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Below are Keith Gillum’s answers to our questionnaire:
SRPG: What are some things the state legislature can do to address the issue in the next term?
We should expand Citizens insurance without delay, which is the public non-profit insurer of Florida. Not only will this lower insurance premiums, but it will make sure all Floridians are covered. Citizens should be available to all homeowners in our state.
SRPG: What are your thoughts on Navarre’s potential incorporation, and would you help usher a bill in support of incorporation through the legislature?
Maybe you saw my piece in South Santa Rosa News. I was happy to be a voice for NO INC. Incorporation will lead to higher taxes. A lot of folks living on small pensions and social security would be squeezed out of their homes if we incorporated at this juncture. I’m always against higher taxes.
SRPG: What needs to be done to maintain Florida’s resiliency in the coming years?
If we expand Citizens Insurance to the fullest, Florida homeowners caught in the destructive path of these hurricanes will be able to rebuild their lives after the storm and stay where they have decided to live and retire. To me, it’s a no-brainer.
SRPG: What are some infrastructure projects needed in District 3 and how can you address these needs at the state level?
We’re going to have to get creative with our infrastructure. I think a great idea is building a second bridge west of our current one. That should extend the life of the first, make sure we got some bang for our buck, and soften the traffic to boot.
SRPG: What got you interested in running for political office this year?
We’re living in a time where Florida is in a position to flourish while simultaneously lowering the cost of living, which is incredible given the times. But it’s going to take political outsiders like myself to be a voice for that change. It’s time to build a Florida economy that works for everyone. We are blessed enough to do it.
