Former UWF star Austin Reed back in NFL

The move was made after Skylar Thompson was placed on injured reserve. Reed joins a quarterback room that includes Lamar Jackson, Tyler Huntley and undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano.

Reed previously played for the Chicago Bears, signing with them in 2024 as an undrafted free agent. Though he didn’t make the roster, he did earn a practice squad spot. Reed never appeared in a regular season game in Chicago but did play in five preseason games, throwing for 230 yards and a touchdown.

The Bears waived him last August, but earlier this year, Reed earned a job as the starting quarterback for the UFL’s Dallas Renegades. He finished second in the league in passing yards with 1,923 and set a single-season league record for touchdown passes (21). The 376 yards he threw for in his debut was a single-game record.

Reed played three seasons for the Argos, leading them to the NCAA Division II national championship in 2019. He transferred to Western Kentucky in 2021 and threw for 4,746 yards, leading the nation in passing yards.
