Congratulations class of 2023

May 23, 2023
Our high school seniors are about to celebrate a huge accomplishment in their life and dip their toe into the adult end of the life pool. We are excited for you as you realize your whole life is ahead of you. You have barely begun to scratch the surface of what you can accomplish. The past twelve years have all been for this moment – mostly.

The temporary suspension of recycling services in Santa Rosa County has been extended. Emerald Coast Utility Authority’s Materials Recycling Facility remains closed as it hires and trains additional personnel and will not be receiving mixed recyclables for processing. Operations are now expected to resume Monday, June 12.

During the School Board meeting on May 16, Santa Rosa County District Schools Media Services and Instructional Technology Specialist Ruth Witter highlighted the School Board’s policies and procedures related to selecting, reviewing, and challenging school library materials. These policies and procedures guide the district’s library media specialists in selecting age-appropriate, legally compliant library collections that engage students and provide opportunities for stakeholders to challenge materials they deem objectionable.

Some stories stay with you

May 16, 2023
I have been in this industry for more than 25 years at this point, getting my first paid job at the Ball State Daily News in the summer of 1998. Since that time, I have written thousands of stories (my best estimate is around 5,000, but that could be a little high or a little low).

‘Bullying is not acceptable’

May 15, 2023
Every year, sometimes more often, we take a look at youth suicide. The future belongs to our children, and we want to watch them grow and thrive. We at the Navarre Press take youth suicide very seriously.

‘Sam Parker Parkway’ has a nice ring to it

May 8, 2023
For years now, a loud subset of Santa Rosa County residents has blasted the Board of County Commissioners – rightfully, we think – for its lack of foresight, especially its failure to ensure infrastructure is sufficient to meet the needs of new development.

There’s a hall of fame for just about everything

May 8, 2023
I have been a fan of video games for practically my entire life. My parents purchased an Atari 2600 for my brother and me in the early ‘80s and I’ve been hooked on them ever since. I even wrote a weekly column on gaming at my last job that was published across the country for a few years. While I don’t consider myself an expert on the subject, I’m definitely well versed in it.

May the Fourth be with you on Star Wars Day

May 4, 2023
If you’re a fan of the galaxy far, far away, it’s one of the days you look forward to the most each year. If you’re not a Star Wars fan, it’s just May 4. “May the Fourth be with you,” a pun on the famous Star Wars line “May the Force be with you,” has led to May 4 being known as Star Wars Day, an unofficial holiday to celebrate all things Star Wars. Although its popularity has certainly grown in the past decade, the earliest celebrations of the commemorative day are almost as old as the franchise itself.

Never too soon: Commissioners need bridge funding plan

May 2, 2023
When Santa Rosa County accepted ownership of Navarre Beach Bridge in 2004, it expected to replace the bridge in as few as 10 years. Almost 20 years later, we’re still using the 63-year-old bridge. Not to worry; Florida Department of Transportation bridge inspectors tell us the span is structurally sound.
